Elijah Sam Moore, of Augusta, died at Unity-Health Specialty Care Hospital in Searcy at the age of 83. Elijah was born in Lamont, Mississippi, to Monroe Wright and Mary Bolden. He received his early education from the Mississippi Public School System. During his early years, he relocated to Benton Harbor, Michigan, where he worked for a number of years doing factory work. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he continued working as a machine operator for local factories.

Elijah was also the former owner and operator of Jewel’s Diner in Chicago for more than 12 years. He was the head short order cook and ran the business with his wife and family members before relocating to Augusta in 2002. In recent years, he had been attending the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Augusta. He was a former member of Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gregory.

His parents; two sons, Tim Moore and Michael Moore; a brother, Otis Watkins; and a sister, Louise Carter, all preceded him in death. Survivors are his wife, Jewel Moore of Augusta; three sons, Eddie Doby, of Chicago, Ill, Sylvester Walker, of Phoenix, AZ, and Lloyd (Beatrice) Doby, of Little Rock; seven daughters, Mary Moore, of Benton Harbor, MI, Barbara Hart, of Seattle, WA, Betty Wells, of Augusta, Joyce Doby, of Phoenix, AZ, Mary Harris, of Chicago, Ill, Leona (Derrick) Wilson, of Brownsville, TN, and Syretha Crawford, of Memphis, TN; fifty-two grandchildren; sixty-five great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law, Bobby Rhodes and Larry Rhodes, both of Augusta, and Johnny Green and Otis (Mildred) Green, both of Chicago, Ill; three sisters-in-law, Hattie Green-Powell, of Stockton, CA, Paulette Green Terrell, of Vallejo, CA, and Ruby Green-Duckworth, of Little Rock; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Graveside services were March 28 at Buckeye Cemetery in Gregory with Elder Robert Gibbs officiating. Professional services were provided by Branscumb Johnson & Gilchrest Funeral Home of Brinkley.
