Verlene Statewright, of Stuttgart, formerly of Clarendon, died at her home at the age of 65. She was born in Clarendon to Lonnie B. Statewright, Sr. and Dorothy Allen-Statewright. She was the eldest child born to this union.

Verlene received her education from the Clarendon Public School System. She was a 1972 graduate of Clarendon High School. She was a lifelong member of Union Missionary Baptist Church in Clarendon. A cook by trade, a talent she learned from her maternal grandmother, Verlene worked in numerous restaurants throughout the years. She was a former employee of Pat’s Place and Andy’s Restaurant, both located in Stuttgart, for a combined total of 14 years. She was also a former employee of Riceland Foods and the Stuttgart Public School System.

Her father, maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents all preceded Verlene in death. Survivors are her son Tommie Statewright of Stuttgart; three daughters: Tara L. Beasley and Regenia Statewright both of Dallas, TX; and Dekova Statewright of Stuttgart; five grandchildren: Malik Blockette of Dallas, TX; Blair Beasley of Fayetteville; Mahila Buchanan of Dallas, TX; De’Kiyah Hall and Brandalyn Williams both of Stuttgart; her mother Dorothy Statewright of Stuttgart; three brothers: Albert G. (Porsha) Statewright of Centerfield, GA; Lonnie B. Statewright Jr. of Clarendon; and Clay V. (Hope) Statewright of Tacoma, WA; two sisters: Janice M. Williams of Dallas, TX; and Nadine (Oliver) Fitzpatrick of Benton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 3 PM at Shady Grove Cemetery, Highway 86 in Clarendon, with Minister David Lee officiating. Professional services provided by Branscumb Johnson & Gilchrest Funeral Home of Brinkley.
